Kushiel's Avatar Review

My only complaint about this third novel in the Kushiel's Chosen series is the fact that there wasn't as much eroticism in the story as in the previous two novels. But other than that, the book is just as good as the first two in the series. The plot is good and her telling of it is fantastic. Every novel in the series she manages to move the characters forward in their lives and shows how they've grown. Warning, there is a bit about child rape in it which might be upsetting to some readers but it wasn't too graphic or anything, just be careful.

The Count Of Monte Cristo Review

This was definitely one of the best books ever! I completely understand why it is a classic novel that everyone should read. It takes a long time to plow through it all- it took me 5 weeks- but it is so completely worth it. You think it's going to have a sad ending but surprisingly does not. The basic story line is that a man is wrongrfully imprisioned, but gets a lot of money and spends it getting revenge on the people who hurt him. Fantastic!

Son of A Witch Review

I hate it when I can't finish a book. I hate it even more when it's 2 books back to back. I found myself completely uninterested in what happens to the character. The plot also is very weak. It seriously needs a stronger plot line. The first book in this series was very good, but this one is a serious flop. Don't bother with it.

The Pink Carnation

I just can't make myself finish this book. It's not a terrible book. In fact in parts, its quite a lot of fun. However when I got this book I thought it would be historical fiction. Not part historical fiction, part romance novel and part chick lit. I hate the term chick lit but it is part that. It's so freaking predictable that I know I don't have to finish the book to know what is going to happen. I should not be able to do that. The writing isn't horrendous but it isn't fantastic either. I really wouldn't bother reading this book unless you like badly written romance novels with a dash of historical fiction.

Review: Bloody Bones

Bloody Bones is one of books in the Anita Blake series. While not quite as good as some of the others, it's still a fun and fast read. I swear to god, (heh, no pun intended really), I get really tired of reading about someone who is supposedly morally better because she's waiting until she's married until she has sex. That's my only real complaint about the character Anita Blake. I wish she wouldn't be such a goody goody type. Every book seems to inch us a little closer to her having sex (I wish she'd give in and have sex with the vampire already Jeez! Woman only have so much will power). The plot isn't quite up to par as some of the others, but it's still worth the read.

The Dead Beat

Not nearly as entertaining as I would hope it would be but it wasn't awful. I just couldn't quite make myself finish it. There were moments of funniness and amusement but honestly, I didn't think the writing was all that good. It kinda bored me and I'm usually into the whole death thing. I'm rather disapointed. An upcoming book I'll be reading is about undertakers.

Widdershins by Charles DeLint

This book is a follow up to DeLint's The Onion Girl. As good as DeLint is, this isn't one of his best however it isn't his worst. I definitely appreciate the fact that he did a follow up to The Onion Girl because he left one of his most beloved characters in a horrible state and does much to remedy that in Widdershins. He does his usual lessons on how we need to treat each other better and how violence isn't the only solution to everything and normally I don't mind, in fact I love it. This time however, it comes across a bit too much like an after school special and became rather schmultzy. I really hate to give a review of DeLint's book that isn't glowing as he is one of my favorite authors. But I don't want to lie either. If you want to know what happens with Jilly after The Onion Girl, do read it. But don't expect it to be as good as it was either.

As Promised: Blue Girl by Charles de Lint

I swear, Charles de Lint is one of the best authors EVER. And so incredibly prolific on top of it which is completely awesome. This is another story of his which is set in Newford, the fictional Canadian town in which a lot of his books are set. I love how his newford series has some of the same people but not always as the main characters. You can be reading a novel of his and one of your favorite characters from another book makes a guest appearance briefly. I totally love that. I wish I could write as well as he does. When he writes it's like pure magic. There's always magic and fairies in his worlds and you find yourself dieing to be part of this world in Newford. But since you can't travel and live there, you have to seatle for his amazing books.

Blue girl is about a tough girl who moves to Newford with her mother and brother where she becomes friends with another much picked upon girl. They meet a ghost who accidently gets them into trouble with some otherworld beings. But that's all I'm going to say because I refuse to ruin a good Charles de Lint book for anyone. Read his books, they are truely the most magical and amazing books you will ever read.

Coming Back

I am bringing my book blog back to life now that I appear to be crawling out of my depression. I'm almost done with the blue girl so that will be my next review. It's by Charles de Lint, one of my favorite authors. My blog is called wordwood, which I took from a Charles de Lint book.

The Courtesan

I really wanted this book to be well done. The plot was pretty good and rather facinating. However, nowhere on the book does it say it's the second book in the series. It isn't necessary to read the series in order, though it's helpful. But the writing just makes me want to puke. It's like reading a Hallmark card crossed with a Romance novel. ACCKK! I really tried to finish the book but I couldn't. The sappiness was getting to me. I did skim it to see what happened but I can guarantee you I won't be reading anything else by this author anytime soon.

Seduced by Moonlight Review

I love all of Laurell K Hamilton books. Both the Merideth Gentry and the Anita Blake series. But since I love faeries I tend to favore the Merideth Gentry series. While this one isn't quite as good as the first two, it's still a fun read. In this series, Hamilton is much more explicit with the sex scenes and so these sex scenes can be quite intense, but highly enjoyable. The plot seemed weak, but at the end of the book it got a little better and there was a purpose to it but the first part, you are wondering where the hell is this going? If you liked the first two, I'd read this one, it's not terrible but it's not her best either.

War of the Flowers

Now that I'm half way done with my next book, I thought it might be a good idea if I put a review of this book up. I love Tad Williams, but this book seems a little bit like a cheap knockoff of Charles Delint. However that being said, I still really enjoed this book. A fairy with my name (which is really unusual) makes an appearance which was really fun for me. It's a lot of fun and definitely one of the most enjoyable fairy stories that I've read. He can't beat Charles Delint, but he does a hell of a good job trying. I recommend reading it.

Jane Austin Book Club

This book was supposed to be really good. However, I was really disapointed and thought this book was really over hyped. I suppose I would have enjoyed the book more if I knew Jane Austin's books better, but one shouldn't have to read an author's complete work to truely understand another author's latest release. If you know Jane Austin's books inside and out you might enjoy it. But I found it trite and rather stupid. Fortunately it was a short book and I didn't waste too much time on it.

The Loves of Charles II

As usual, Jean Plaidy did a fantastic job. When I first started reading her books, they had gone out of print. Recently they started reprinting the books, somtimes combining several of her books into one volume. In the case of The Loves of Charles II, three books of Jean Plaidy's were combined into one volume.

The first part or book is called The Wandering Prince. It's about Charles II and how he gets restored to the thrown of England. It is also about the love between him and his sister. Also included is one of his mistresses with whom he has a favorite child. It is up to Plaidy's incredible standards and a blast to read.

The Historian

I FINALLY finished this book. It's not your typical vampire book. It's more about how a scholor and his daughter hunt down Dracula. It's so well done that it's really believable. There are some slow points but if you keep making your way through the book you'll get rewarded with how every single plot line is completed. Don't expect vampires and gore every page but it's still a fantastic read. I highly recommend it.

Review: Crossroads of Twilight

It's been awhile since I've read any of the Robert Jordan novels because they were getting really old, boring and repetative. The 10th book wasn't any different unfortunately. But damn it I am going to stick with the series because I want to bloody (*Snort*) know what happens. I seriously hope they improve because they just seem like all filler. Nothing that significant happend in this book and it could have been half the size. It's like he just wrote the book to make money and not further the plot. If he drags the series out much longer, I'm going to be dead by the time he reaches the end. I don't recommend reading this book unless you are determined to finish the series like I am

Review: Mindhunter

A facinating look at criminal profiling. The book is written by John Douglas who is the special agent in the FBI who pioneered criminal profiling. Funny enough, he even talks about the BTK killer who at the time of the writing of the book hadn't been caught. But in the mean time the BTK killer has been caught. While the book is rather gruesome I didn't mind it as I love reading about these sorts of things. I read the book really fast and throughly enjoyed learning why serial killers do certain things. Very facinating. If you like forensics and crime stuff, you'll love this book

Review: Lost in a Good Book

This series is an English majors idea of what a mystery should be. The literary detective jumps through classic books meeting characters from classic novels. This is the second in the series and I loved it as much as I did the first one. The author is hysterical and this novel is incredibly original. I highly recommend it.

Review: The Lovely Bones by Alice Seybold

A reviewer is quoted on the back of the book as saying: "Desteined to become a classic, in the vein of To Kill A Mockingbird...I loved it". I feel the same way. I think I would have liked it even more if I had never seen the show Dead Like Me on HBO where some people after they die become grim reapers and watch their own families. Only the HBO show had a lot of humor and this book is just sad. A young girl is raped and murdered and she watches her family heal after her death. It's very sad but fortunately not graphic. It's depressing but very, very real. I really recommend this book.

Review: The Ghatti's Tale: FInder's Seekers

You have to be a cat person to truely enjoy this first book in the Ghatti's Tale Series. The Ghatti are basically large cats who can communicate with certain humans (called Seekers). The main character, Doyce, is a seeker and her bondmate is K'har, a female cat. They are called on to investigate the murder of her lover Oriel who was also a seeker. I really enjoyed this novel and found it to be very different from any other fantasy series I've read. I love the Ghatti and their affection for humans. If you like animals and you like cats I suspect you'll enjoy this.

Review : Inside Therapy

This book is a collection of stories/articles etc written by therapists. Facinating. I've learned a lot about how and why my therapist asks me things that she does. I really recommend this book if you've been in therapy or are a therapist. I finished this book while I was on vacation and trashed the book so I can't finish doing the story by story review. It was really freudian toward the end and it seemed a bit ridiculous because I doubt any therapist has their patients like down, never mind smoke in therapy. Not too bad.

Who Listens- About a woman who refuses to talk in therapy. I did that once when I was really young. I
thought I heard the woman say that she didn't believe me so I refused to talk to her anymore. I
could relate with this story and enjoyed it immensly.

The Therapists Personality- Almost an article about what a good therapist should be like. I agreed
with just about everything this author said and was very pleased to see that Mother Sugar (my
therapist) had all of the qualitities of a fantastic therapist.

The Making of a Psychiatrist- It's interesting to learn how Psychiatrists are trained to be psychiatrists.
The thing is, Psychiatrists don't do therapy anymore. They write the prescriptions and send you
off to a therapist.

Angel of Darkness by Charles DeLint

Delint warns you in the introduction that this is a lot darker than his normal books and I agree that it is. Angel of Darkness was originally published under the name Samuel M. Key so people could differentiate between his darker, mystery novels and his more fantasy novels.

If you are very squeemish I wouldn't recommend this as Delint does get pretty graphic. But you can easily tell it's a Charles Delint Novel because of all of the crossing over to the otherworld that goes on. This is what everyone fantasizes would happen to all the psychopaths, rapists, wife beaters etc on the planet. It's gruesome but like most of Delint's books, it's a great read.

Review: The Sun Sword

Technorati: | |

I FINALLY finished this damned book. Don't get me wrong, it's a good book but it took me 6 weeks to plow through it. I can read a 900 page book faster than that normally. But Michelle West writing is really hard to follow sometimes. Plus I think it could have been trimmed. I don't mind reading long books, in fact I love it normally but this was just unbearably long in parts. This was the 6th book in the series and ties everything up nicely. If you've read the first 5 books in the series, it's worth the effort to plow your way through this one.

Odds Stacked Against Pleasure Reading

From The Washington Post

By Valerie Strauss (who happens to be a family friend)
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 24, 2005; Page A11

Sherre Sachar comes from a book-loving family. Her father, Louis, is an award-winning author, and the graduating senior thinks that settling down with a good book should be one of life's great joys. But as she prepares to leave high school and head to Cornell University in the fall, she is tired of reading.

The extensive required reading in her high school classes -- including Advanced Placement English Literature, where she flew from one classic to another -- left her with no time to pick up books she thought would be fun. And she was frustrated by teachers who offered either too little help in understanding the complex texts or conducted tortured efforts to wring symbolism out of every word.
